Overview
People already standardized on Microsoft 365 use it to draft documents, summarize threads and explore spreadsheet questions without switching to a separate AI chat site. Consumer Copilot remains available as a free app experience, while Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and business SKUs layer Copilot features into the desktop apps organizations already deploy. Microsoft has renamed its consumer bundles several times, so the plan that carries in-app Copilot may not have the name you expect. Limitation: free Copilot chat is not the same as full Copilot-in-Word/Excel for every account, and company tenants depend on admin enablement. Treat spreadsheet formulas and legal wording as drafts until a human verifies them.
Key features
- AI assistant across web, Windows and Microsoft 365 apps
- Drafting and analysis help in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Free Copilot app plus Copilot features via Microsoft 365 plans
Limitations
Deep Office integration usually needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription; free Copilot chat alone may not match in-app capabilities.
